AI Material Swap: Compare Finishes and Explore Your Options

Try Material Swap

Architectural material swap: help your client picture the alternatives

“What would it look like with a different finish?” It’s a question clients ask, and one you probably ask yourself as the design develops. Samples help, but seeing a surface in context makes it easier to understand how its colour and texture work with everything around it.

ArchLife lets you explore those possibilities from an existing image. You can change materials in an architectural render, bring alternatives to a meeting and give your client something concrete to respond to. It’s also a way to test your own ideas before deciding which ones to develop in the CAD or BIM model, which stays unchanged.

AI material swapping: choose the element you want to work on

Start with the part of the scene you want to reconsider. The selector offers six options:

  • Building facade: for facade material exploration, from a lighter finish to a different cladding direction.
  • Pavement / sidewalk: to see another treatment along an entrance or pedestrian route.
  • Roof: to consider how the covering works with the rest of the building.
  • Road surface: to explore the appearance of access roads and nearby streets.
  • Wall cladding: to compare finishes on a visible wall.
  • Ground / landscape: to test another look for the ground around the architecture.

For exterior finish visualization, include enough of the surroundings to judge the overall effect. You can change facade materials, for example, while keeping the roof and paving visible for context. To change facade material with AI, choose a view where the wall is easy to see.

Change render materials with AI in a few steps

  1. Upload your starting view

Use an image that clearly shows the part you want to change.

  2. Choose an element

Select the relevant option, such as wall cladding, roof or pavement / sidewalk.

  3. Generate and compare

Create an alternative, then move the before-and-after slider to compare it with the original.

Change facade materials and compare options with your client

Use the comparison to discuss what works: the colour, texture and relationship with nearby surfaces. Does the new finish feel right? Would you like to take that direction further, or consider another option? Visualize facade finishes in context and give everyone a clearer starting point than words alone.

The result helps you settle on a direction. When you move towards specifying a product, confirm its actual colour, texture scale and technical suitability with samples and manufacturer information.

Need a more specific adjustment?

Use Material Swap when you want to explore a finish through the element selector. For more specific requests, open Refine Render: describe what you want in a prompt, add reference images or select a particular area to work on. It’s useful when your idea needs more explanation than an element choice alone.

For a first visualization from a model screenshot, AI Render is another starting point. You can also browse the ArchLife tool range for other tasks.

Give your next idea a new look

Start with a view you already have, choose an element and generate another version. In just a few steps, you’ll have an option to put in front of your client—or a fresh direction to develop yourself.
